The newest grant of $5,000 comes on top of $19,000 across two earlier grants in 2015 and 2016.</div><div>The Department of Conservation's (DOC’s) community ranger Melody McLaughlin says they are the only community group in the Wellington area to be funded back to back for three years.</div><div>She says this is an exceptional project using highly professional techniques and showing real outcomes for biodiversity. The repeated support from DOC is fully deserved.</div><div>The Kiernans fenced the bush block nearly 30 years ago to exclude stock. After the half-time interval Horowhenua College was in 1st place but after a closely fought last hour they were pipped by just 2 points by Palmerston North Boys High School.</div><div>The team was coached by Mr Smith, mentored by Mrs Corbett and supported on</div><div>the night by Mr O’Brien. The centre also received $500 from the Horowhenua District Council in 2017 and about $2000 last year.</div><div>There are about 100 students each year at the Horowhenua centre. Bulman says they were given help to complete NCEA qualifications, they were taught basic numeracy and literacy skills, and how to write resumes and cover letters.</div></div>]]></content:encoded></item><item><title>Kapiti Youth Thrive With Zeal</title><description><![CDATA[One full-time manager, three part-time coordinators, and a combined 4000 volunteer hours later show that this has been a busy year for Zeal Kāpiti.A host of programmes designed for local creative Kiwi youths to get involved, stay engaged, and learn skills increased over the past year, emphasising collaboration within the Kāpiti District.
