Waikanae Parallel Parking Wins

March 15, 2018

The Kapiti Coast District Council has rejected calls for angle parking on State Highway 1 in Waikanae, and opted for parallel parking.

The Council voted today on a project that aims to make a section of the existing State Highway 1 between Te Moana Road and Ngaio Road, a fit-for-purpose local road with improved amenity and east-west pedestrian and cycling connections, between the railway station, the town centre and the river.

Kapiti Mayor K Gurunathan said there are very strong views for both options but the final decision was based on safety because angle parking would have increased the risk of crashes.

He says council's discussion also recognised that further work is needed to help businesses in the town centre to thrive.
