30kmh for part of Waikanae highway?

March 16, 2018

Traffic along part of the old highway in Waikanae could be slowed to 30 kmh if a recommendation to the Kapiti Coast District Council goes ahead.

The proposal to change the speed limt was revealed this week when councillors approved a new cycleway and 32 parallel parks along stretch of road between Te Moana Road and Ngaio Road, over the 42 angle parks and no cycleway preferred by most of the business community.

Kāpiti Coast Mayor K Gurunathan says it will be about a year before the speed limit is decided, so there will be plenty of time for a "conversation" about it.

Waikanae ward councillor Michael Scott says the split decision was "sadly deluded" and the town's business community had been ignored.

A petition for angle parking has gathered 172 signatures in a few days and many of the town's businesses have submitted against the plan.
