Mayors Back Govt Funding Ambulances

March 18, 2018

A campaign initiated in Kapiti has resulted in eight regional Mayors urging the Government to fully fund the local ambulance services.

The Mayoral Forum has written to the Minister of Health, formally calling for Wellington's ambulance service to be treated the same way as the Police and Fire & Emergency services.

Currently the ambulance service is expected to go cap-in-hand to raise community donations for their operational funding, while the Police and Fire Service are funded by Government.

Kapiti Mayor K Gurunathan says regional mayors have put their collective weight behind recent calls for the government to support the ambulance services.

He praised the Kapiti Health Advocacy Group and Paraparaumu/Raumati Community Board, in particular Kathy Spiers, for sparking the initiative.

Guru says it’s a credit to the way the region's mayors work together, that a grassroots initiative is tested and adopted by the Mayoral Forum.

The Mayoral Forum includes Mayors from Carterton, Hutt City Council, Kāpiti Coast, Masterton, Porirua City, South Wairarapa, Upper Hutt, Wellington and the Wellington Regional Council.
