Pets Permitted on Public Transport

March 21, 2018

Domestic pets will shortly be allowed on public transport in Kapiti.

The Greater Wellington Regional Council today confirmed that pets will be allowed on buses, trains and ferries around the region.

The new regulation will come into effect for Kapiti in April for trains and July for buses.

Pets are only allowed on public transport at off-peak hours at no extra charge and will only be permitted in a suitable pet carrier.

Public transport drivers can refuse pet entry if they look or act unsafe for passengers on board.

Chair of Sustainable Transport Committee Barbara Donaldson told Beach FM that “we are trying to normalise carrying pets on public transport, they do it overseas so why can’t we.”

She says: “If the public want to make it happen, we will make it happen.”
