Mural Raises Fish Awareness

April 6, 2018

Students from six Porirua schools have completed an outdoor mural to raise awareness of fish in the Kenepuru stream.

The students - who have been working on the colourful artwork for the past term -  were inspired after taking part in an “art meets science” programme.

The project was part of a collaboration programme between Mountains to Sea Wellington (MTSW) and Pātaka Education.

Students were able to learn about native fish living in the stream, including threatened native species, the inanga.

Mountain to Sea Programme Director Zoe Studd says, she helped the students get some hands-on science.

Studd says: “Having the right habitat and a healthy stream is crucial to fish lifecycle, so it’s important we work to protect and enhance this part of the stream.”

The mural is located in Bothamley Park, next to Kenepuru Stream.
