Kapiti residents concerned about smoke or odours from industrial areas, should contact the Greater Wellington Regional Council.
Locals took to social media yesterday about regularly suffering from “acrid smoke wafting”, from an industrial yard on Matai Road, Raumati.
Jeremy Rusbatch, Team Leader for the Council’s Environmental Regulation unit, says they visited a company on Matai Road, after receiving a resident complaint in January 2018.
The company was advised to stop burning concrete bags with plastic lining, because it was against regional plan rules.
However, as there were no further complaints, the council have not revisited the site.
Mr Rusbatch says the council doesn’t return to offending properties, unless they’re asked to follow up.
He says: “At this point we haven’t had any further complaints … so we are simply not aware if the issue has kept going after January 19th.”
Mr Rusbatch advises the public to call the Council’s confidential environmental hotline 0800 496 734, if they notice any smoke or odours coming from any property.
