Otaki Roundabout Congestion Ideas

April 13, 2018

The New Zealand Transport Agency is looking at what can be done about the vehicles blocking the Otaki roundabout during busy weekends.

Otaki Ward Councillor James Cootes has been exploring solutions with the agency.

He says NZTA has looked at putting lines on the road surfaces, but safety concerns for motorcyclists in wet weather has scuppered that idea.

Digital or permanent signs warning motorists to keep the roundabout clear, is being considered.

Police enforcement was also discussed but as cars on State Highway 1 are transient, it’s not expected that a Police blitz would change behaviour.

Mr Cootes says ultimately it “comes down to bad driver behaviour and people not obeying the road rules, or being courteous to other road users”.
