HRC Against Regional Fuel Tax

May 7, 2018

While Greater Wellington Regional Council would impose a regional fuel tax to help fund Transport developments, Horizons Regional Council is not in favour of such a move.

The option of a fuel tax has become available thanks to the Land Transport Management (Regional Fuel Tax) Amendment Bill, which was introduced in March.

Greater Wellington chair Chris Laidlaw says they need all the help they can get.

However, Horizons Regional Council did not support the bill.

Chair Bruce Gordon says the introduction of a regional fuel tax, on top of the Government's proposed nationwide petrol excise duty, would be felt extremely hard by our communities.

He says it would consider a regional fuel tax if sub-region or district specific taxes were available but until then it had no intention of applying for one.
