Following the announcement of preliminary results for Palmerston North's Māori Ward Poll, Mayor Grant Smith says he is disappointed to learn there will not be Māori representation at the Council's table.
14,567 voted against a Māori ward or wards being established; 6530 voted for.
Mayor Smith says Māori representation is unique to New Zealand and Local Government is the only area where we don't have it, and he had hoped the community would have voted differently to address this anomaly.
He adds that the poll allowed democracy to take place and we must now accept that outcome.
It is anticipated that the official results for the Maori Ward Poll will be available by this Thursday, 24 May.
