Power Outage Cause Unclear

June 13, 2018

With a mysterious flash of light, two Horowhenua towns were plunged into darkness recently.

Shannon and Foxton residents reported a bright flash of green and blue light to the southeast just before the power went out on Monday night.

Electra chief executive Neil Simmonds confirmed there were power outages in the Shannon and Foxton areas just after 7pm.

Electra sent technicians out to investigate, but they were unable to figure out what caused the outage at the time. One possibility was the lines shorted out after being hit by swans.

Mr Simmonds says the company often had problems with swans flying into the lines at this time of year, but it was uncertain if that's what happened on Monday.

Another team of technicians was headed out to try and identify the cause yesterday.
