$150,000 from the KCDC for Air Chathams is not new money according to the Mayor.
Speaking on Beach FM yesterday, Kapiti Mayor K Gurunathan says the council’s initial contribution of $150,000 for marketing in support of Air Chathams is not new money and has nothing to do with rates.
Mayor Guru says the money has come from a destination development fund, but adds that future contributions from Council are pending on the outcome of on-going negotiations with the airline.
He is hopeful they can be managed without impact on ratepayers.
Mayor Guru makes no apology for supporting an airline that is prepared to take a risk in providing local flights to Auckland, and adds that without them it may the start of a slippery slope to the entire loss of the airport.
