Rates Differential Explained

June 18, 2018

Kapiti Mayor K Gurunathan explained that lower

than expected rates increases for 71% of local residential ratepayers were offset by higher rates for commercial and rural ratepayers.

Mayor Guru concurs that the current rating system is a blunt instrument when rates increases are in most part based on property valuations.

He says Kapiti Chamber of Commerce have also raised concerns about increases in commercial rates.

Mayor Guru says the average 4.8% increase has also been driven by the roading contract for which there has only been one tender.

Overall, he would like to see a change from the current system to prevent rates from skyrocketing.
